Artificial Intelligence is here, and going forward, it will only get better.
But one area we hardly talk about enough is the fate of the kids sitting in our classrooms today.
Should our children wait until they enter higher institutions of learning before they are introduced to AI?
I guess by then, the world would have moved far ahead.
This is not an argument against traditional education. Far from it. It is an argument for preparing our children for the world they are actually going to live and work in.
For many of the children in our schools today, AI will not be a distant technology they hear about in the news. It will be part of their everyday lives.
They will use AI to learn, write, research, create, communicate, solve problems and perhaps even make decisions.
Some of them will work in jobs that do not exist today.
Others will work in professions that will look very different because of AI.
Yet, in many places, we are still treating AI as something students should encounter much later in their educational journey.
I think we need to rethink this.
The question is no longer whether our children will encounter Artificial Intelligence.
They will.
The real question is whether we will prepare them for it.
AI education is not about teaching children to use ChatGPT
There is an important distinction here.
When we talk about AI education in schools, we should not reduce the conversation to teaching children how to use ChatGPT or another AI tool.
Tools will change.
What is popular today may be replaced by something better tomorrow.
What children need are the foundational skills that will remain relevant even as the technology changes.
They need to understand, at an age-appropriate level, what AI is and how it works.
They need to understand that AI can be powerful but can also be wrong.
They need to learn how to question information, verify facts, recognise bias and think critically about what a machine produces.
They need to understand responsible and ethical use.
They need to know that using AI to help them learn is different from allowing AI to do all their thinking for them.
That distinction matters.
If we introduce AI without teaching critical thinking, we may create a generation that knows how to generate answers but does not know how to determine whether those answers are correct.
That would be a serious problem.
We should start early
We don't wait until university before teaching children how to read.
We don't wait until adulthood before introducing them to mathematics.
We don't wait until they enter the workplace before teaching them how to communicate.
These are foundational skills because we understand that children need time to develop them.
AI literacy should be treated in much the same way.
This does not mean putting sophisticated AI systems in the hands of very young children without structure or supervision.
It means gradually introducing the ideas.
A younger child can learn that a computer can recognise patterns and make predictions.
An older student can learn about algorithms, data, bias and the limitations of AI.
Secondary school students can begin exploring how AI is being used in different industries, how to evaluate AI-generated information and how to use AI tools responsibly in their schoolwork.
By the time they reach higher education, they should not be meeting AI for the first time.
They should already have a foundation.
There is another issue we need to consider
AI will not affect every child equally.
Children who have access to good devices, reliable internet, knowledgeable teachers and quality AI resources will have an advantage.
Those who don't may be left behind.
This is where schools become even more important.
If we leave AI education entirely to parents and individual children, we risk creating another digital divide.
Some children will grow up understanding AI and using it confidently.
Others may only encounter it much later.
And the gap may not simply be about who has a computer.
It could become a gap between those who know how to use AI effectively and those who don't.
Education has always played a role in reducing such inequalities.
AI should be no different.
Teachers must be part of the conversation
There is also no point talking about AI education in schools without talking about teachers.
We cannot expect teachers to prepare children for an AI-driven world if we do not prepare the teachers themselves.
Teachers need training.
They need to understand the technology, its opportunities and its limitations.
They need practical guidance on how AI can support teaching and learning without replacing the human relationship at the heart of education.
And perhaps most importantly, teachers need to understand how to help students use AI without becoming dependent on it.
The goal should not be to make the classroom more technological for the sake of technology.
The goal should be to make learning better.
AI can help a teacher personalise learning.
It can help generate exercises.
It can help explain difficult concepts in different ways.
It can help students brainstorm ideas.
But the teacher still matters.
The teacher provides context, judgement, encouragement, discipline and human connection.
AI does not replace those things.
We should also teach children what AI cannot do
This may be one of the most important parts of AI education.
Children should learn that an AI system can produce a confident answer and still be wrong.
They should understand that AI does not automatically equal truth.
They should learn that technology reflects the data and systems behind it, and that those systems can contain limitations and biases.
They should learn about privacy.
They should understand why they should be careful about the personal information they share with AI systems.
They should understand intellectual property and plagiarism.
They should know that simply generating something with AI does not automatically make it their own work.
These are not merely technical issues.
They are issues of character, judgement and responsibility.
And that is precisely why AI education belongs in education.
The bigger opportunity
Perhaps the biggest opportunity is not teaching children to use AI.
It is teaching them to think better because AI exists.
If AI can increasingly handle routine tasks, then our education systems need to place even greater emphasis on the things humans must continue to develop.
Curiosity.
Creativity.
Critical thinking.
Communication.
Problem-solving.
Collaboration.
Judgement.
Ethics.
The ability to ask good questions.
Interestingly, AI may force us to return to some of the most important goals of education.
For years, we have often focused heavily on memorisation and producing the correct answer.
But when a machine can generate an answer in seconds, perhaps the better question becomes:
Can the student understand the answer?
Can they challenge it?
Can they explain it?
Can they apply it to a real problem?
Can they recognise when the answer is wrong?
Can they come up with a better question?
These are skills that will matter even more in an AI-powered world.
So, when should we start?
I don't think the answer is "when they get to university."
That is too late.
AI education should start in our schools, introduced gradually and responsibly according to the age and maturity of the learner.
We should not rush children into technology simply because it is fashionable.
But we should also not keep them away from a technology that is rapidly reshaping the world around them.
There is a middle ground.
We can introduce AI thoughtfully.
We can teach children how to use it without becoming dependent on it.
We can teach them to question it.
We can teach them to verify.
We can teach them to create with it while still developing their own creativity.
And we can teach them that technology is a tool, not a substitute for thinking.

It is going to become more capable, more accessible and more deeply integrated into our lives.
Our children will be part of that future whether we prepare them or not.
So perhaps the conversation we should be having is not, "Should children be using AI?"
It should be:
What do our children need to know about AI before AI becomes an even bigger part of their lives?
And if we know the future is coming, why wait until our children get to university before we prepare them for it?
The classroom is where the conversation should begin.
